Opened in 1868, Hoppegarten became the centre of German racing, similar to Newmarket, Chantilly or The Curragh. Following the war, and the division of Germany, Hoppegarten found itself on the wrong side of the wall and, although racing continued, it was not until reunification took place in 1990 that efforts were made to restore Hoppegarten to its pre-war eminence.
The Grosser Preis von Berlin is a Group I race run over 2,400 meters (1½ miles) for horses three years old and upwards. In 2014 the race was won by Sirius with Berlin Berlin in second and Lucky Star in third place.
