BREEDERS' CUP 2009 RETURNS TO SUNNY CALIFORNIA!
THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF THOROUGHBRED RACING

Join us for two days of spectacular racing at Santa Anita for the 2009 Breeders' Cup! The Breeders' Cup has become a two-day extravaganza of the best thoroughbred racing in the world. We are thrilled to be able to offer you Club House seats with Turf Club admission, together with an exclusive dining area in our private "Sirona's" facility.

SANTA ANITA

In 2008 the Breeders' Cup returned to the spectacular setting of Santa Anita and we are delighted that Breeders' Cup 2009 remains at Santa Anita. Southern California produces some of the finest racing in America and many of America's foremost horses and trainers are centred in the Los Angeles area.

Santa Anita occupies 320 acres with a stunning backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. Its landmark 1,100 foot-long, Art Deco grandstand, with its original 30's façade, seats 26,000 guests and the track infield can comfortably accommodate a crowd of 50,000 or more! Santa Anita is unusual in having a hillside turf course, which crosses the all-weather track and is used for races over 6 furlongs.

In addition to the weekend's racing, early risers can experience 'Clockers' Corner' where breakfast is served from 6.00am. An opportunity to see the early morning workouts and runners stretch their legs in the Californian sunshine.

BREEDERS' CUP

Last year's Championships were dominated by European horses but since the event there has been much controversy amongst the American trainers about the newly laid Polytrack, synthetic surface which appeared to suit European trained horses extremely well.

DettoriandRavensPass

On the Saturday, European trained horses took five of the nine Breeders' Cup races. In the Breeders' Cup Classic, the richest race on the programme, John Gosden's Raven's Pass, ridden by Frankie Dettori, came home ahead of Irish challenger Henrythenavigator with hot favourite Curlin, last year's winner and American "Horse of the Year", back in fourth place. This was an historic moment for the Europeans, being the first time European horses had taken first and second places in this race. John Gosden and Frankie Dettori triumphed again in the Juvenile Turf when Donativum beat Westphalia, who was partnered by Johnny
Murtagh. The Breeders' Cup Turf was won by Conduit, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore. The Breeders' Cup Mile went to the French challenger Goldikova who was ridden by Olivier Peslier and trained by Freddie Head and the Marathon went to Muhannak, trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Pat Smullen.

Conduit Landscape

European punters had a marvellous 2 days; not only did they celebrate the victorious European horses but they also celebrated their bountiful winnings. The American Tote was paying out far higher prices on European horses than could have been achieved by backing them with UK bookmakers - a great reason to travel over to see the action live!
