Munich, rivalled only by Berlin as Germany's most popular destination, is a sophisticated city. It is a haven for all sorts of culture with a staggering array of museums, a vibrant arts scene as well as its famous “Beer Gardens”.

The Racecourse in Munich is situated at Riem, about 5 miles due east of the city centre. The lefthanded oval track has an excellent racing surface and is generally regarded as one of the best and fairest in Germany with a straight of just over 3 furlongs on the round course. The track itself dates back to 1895, but facilities are modern; the main grandstand was built in 1972 for the Olympic Games. Munich's two main races are the “Bavarian Classic” an important derby trial held in May and the Grosser Dallmayr Preis “Bayerisches Zuchtrennen” in July. This is Germany's most important ten furlong race and has been a Group 1 event since 1990. This race attracts a strong international field, and in 2007 Soldier Hollow trained by Peter Schiergen was successful, a 3 length winner from the Godolphin runner Formal Decree.
