Pau, situated in South West France near the Pyrenees, is rich in culture and sport. The views of the Pyrenees form an idyllic backdrop to this beautiful French city.
In the 19th century Pau became very popular with the British when a Scottish doctor proclaimed the curative powers of its mild climate leading to the city’s soubriquet – “La Ville Anglaise”. The first mainland golf course, steeplechasing, fox-hunting and very many fine English-style villas as well as the spectacular Boulevard des Pyrenees all bear testament to the British influence. There is indeed still an Anglican church in Pau; St. Andrews.
Pau has the second largest training centre in France and is recognised as the home of French Steeplechasing. Jean-Claude Rouget trains here albeit he is the top trainer in France in terms of the number of winners on the flat. The winter National Hunt season culminates in the Grand Steeplechase de Pau and 2009 sees the 122nd running of this race over 5,300m, with prize money of approximately £100,000. Pau racecourse not only has a Steeplechase course, but also a cross country course, a hurdle course plus an all-weather flat course!
